In the event of a doomsday event occurring, our modern communication devices will more than likely be useless.
In truth, it depends on the event. If the event is a health pandemic, then most likely everything will still work. A massive solar flare however, will wipe all those things out. Cell phones will be the first to disappear, so assume you won't have them. The same for the internet. For most younger people, this will be one of the biggest adjustments.
Radio is likely to survive longer than anything. Battery powered or wind - up will be good, and you will need to have at least two. That way you can monitor a range of wavelengths and frequencies as the situation deteriorates.
A CB radio system is an obvious choice for an alternative method of communication. You can search different channels to see if other people are broadcasting, then converse for information on events. Also have a copy of Morse Code so if you receive a message in it you will know what it says.
The golden rule of post doomsday events is "DO NOT REVEAL YOUR LOCATION!" Simply put, don't trust anyone, no matter what they say.
